Area Access & Pedestrian Impact
As part of the first steps, a construction fence is being erected around the perimeter of the YSB construction project and the vacated Parking Lot 22. The enclosed area will not only contain the new building project area, but also the Construction Manager’s logistics and construction operations as seen in the Site Logistics Plan and Pedestrian Access Map. Before the demolition of JW Gibbs can begin, the existing utilities connected to the vacated building need to be separated and re-located. Subsequently the existing underground interior service and pedestrian corridor running through the Bass and JW Gibbs to the KBT Concourse will be closed as of December 12th in advance of JW Gibbs demolition.
On occasion sections of the construction site and fence will be adjusted to accommodate temporary operations. These will be communicated beforehand as they affect the pedestrian routes.
The construction fence and the closure of this corridor will affect exterior pedestrian routes to and from Parking Lot 16 and the Pierson-Sage Garage at the northeast end of Science Hill as follows:
To/From KGL, Peabody, Evans, and all buildings south of Sachem St.:
Please use the Whitney Ave. public sidewalk along the east side of the YSB construction fence.
To/From ESC and OML:
Please use the same public Whitney Ave. and Sachem St. sidewalks, or take a short cut along the existing walk across the north side main entry of KGL to the existing Sachem Woods walkway running along the west side of ESC from Sachem St.
To/From Kroon, KBT, SPL:
Same as above; please use the public Whitney Ave. and Sachem St. sidewalks, or take a short cut along the existing walk across the north side main entry of KGL to the existing Sachem Woods walkway running along the west side of ESC to Sachem St. Use any of the existing Sachem Woods walking paths to access Kroon, KBT and SPL from Sachem St. For a period next spring the walkway along the east side of SCL will also be open for a connection to the top level of the Pierson-Sage Garage.
To/From SCL, KCL, CRB:
Same as above along Whitney Ave. For those with security card swipe access to the Chemistry buildings, an existing short cut is available from the top level of the Pierson-Sage Garage elevator/stair tower to CRB’s north entry off the Edward St. service drive. SCL, KCL, and CRB are now internally connected to each other at the ground floor levels.
Please use the existing route to the existing entrance/exit at the west side of the Bass loading dock, the east side, and south side Plaza level entry/exits will be closed. A temporary accessibility ramp will be installed adjacent to the Bass loading dock entrance/exit.
To/From WL, WL-W, EAL:
Please use existing route to existing entrance/exit.
Service and truck traffic will continue to all major loading docks of Science Hill with the following modifications:
KGL and Peabody Service Dock:
The existing service lane for trucks to/from the KGL/Peabody loading dock will be temporarily re-oriented to run through the construction site, however pedestrian access along this drive through the construction site will not be available. Please use Whitney Ave. as explained above.
Bass Service Dock:
The existing service lane and docks for trucks to/from Bass will remain. Access to the Bass Stock Rm. for those with security card swipe access is available from SCL via the existing Bass/SCL connector bridge. Access from KBT, SPL, OML to the Stock Rm. requires a short exterior route between KBT and SCL. Unfortunately the only interior route from these locations to the Stock Rm. is via vehicle from the Bass loading dock to the Southwest Service Dock next to Kroon.
Bike Racks & Picnic Tables:
Bass and JW Gibbs bike racks on the east side of these buildings will be relocated to the south side main entry of WL and the north side main entry of KGL. New bike racks have already been installed at these location as shown in the attached plan. Please remove all bikes from the existing racks on the east side of JW Gibbs and Bass as these will be within the construction site.
KBT Plaza picnic tables have also been relocated to areas in front of KGL, and between SPL and SCL.
The existing CT Transport Bus shelter on the corner of Whitney and Humphrey, as well as the Yale Shuttle shelter along the driveway between Parking Lot 16 and 22 will both remain in operation as is.
Please contact Yale Shuttle, Yale Parking, Yale Traffic & Receiving, and Yale security directly for questions related to these services, and any necessary adjustments.
